I moved to the area like a year and a half ago when we just found an amazing flat. I actually hadn’t ever been to Portobello until the day I went for my flat viewing but we just fell in love with it.
Compared to other markets in London, everything is very mixed: the people, the type of shops, everything. It feels very relaxed. You can sense and feel that people have been here for years. I just like the people here, the mix of tourists and the people that live here also.
It’s sad that very often businesses just disappear. I know people who’ve just been like, we’ve got to close now. I think it's cost. It costs a lot to rent places around here now.
I feel like I’ve caught it in a really good patch. I’ve never really thought about the new shops taking over until recently. I arrived when it was still a lot of all the old businesses that have always been there, mixed with the new… and that’s what I like. I wouldn’t like it if it just becomes all the new chain shops.
